Tamil Nadu Driving License: How to Apply for DL in Tamil Nadu

Driving license in Tamil Nadu – know the procedure to apply online

Driving License is mandatory to ride/ drive a vehicle in Tamil Nadu and with the help of a driving license, it is legal to drive a car or ride a bike within the state. Anyone above the age of 18 needs to obtain a driving license and the steps for applying is explained below.

To apply for a driving license in Tamil Nadu, the process can be done both offline and online:


  • The eligible applicant after checking up with the eligibility criteria should contact the nearby RTO office where they belong
  • After procuring the LLR, the driver’s license should be applied after 30 days to 6 months from the date of application of LLR
  • The downloaded application form should be filled and submitted along with the supporting documents and fee for verification
  • After verification by the RTO officer, the license will be issued to the applicant

Online mode

  • Online applications can be downloaded online and filled up along with supporting documents uploaded
  • The fee can be paid online and the printout of submitted application form along with acknowledgment form is submitted at the RTO office
  • The RTO officer will review your application and license will be issued based on the verification

The documents required for applying drivers’ license are:

  • Application Form 4
  • Identity proof like Aadhar card
  • Form 5 for applicants applying through a Driving school
  • Vehicle documents for applying for a license – RC, Fitness certificate, Pollution control certificate, Insurance certificate
  • 3 copies of Passport size photos

The applicants who are eligible to apply for a driver’s license are:

  • The applicant should be above the age of 18 to apply for a driver’s license
  • A valid Learners license is required before applying for a drivers license
  • LLR should be valid – should be applied 30 days after the LLR’ application date and within 6 months
  • The applicant should be aware of the rules and regulations in case of possessing a commercial license and should be above the age of 20

The fee structure for applying for a driver’s license is Rs. 250/– excluding service charges and service charge of Rs 100 and Rs 50 for non-transport vehicle and transport vehicle.

The driver’s license is valid for ten years and should be renewed after that with supporting documents and by attending a driving test.
